A Love Letter to Louis James...

I must confess…

I’ve had an eleven year love affair with a lovely old lady.

It’s been expensive and the longest committed relationship of my life.

We were together for most of my mid-20s to 30s.
We took care of each other.
We partied with each other.
She taught me about my resilience and power.
She gave me courage to grow up -
She reminded me growing up doesn’t mean being boring.
She gave me a place to make my own…
and a place to invite everyone in.

I met Louis James (“Louie J” / “LJ”) as a fresh, 26-year old, single, lady stumbling into Canterbury Woods during a soul searching “I didn’t see life going this way at 26…” drive around town. I remember falling in love with the safe-tucked-away-but-close-to-everything, vibe. I remember taking Steph, Ali, and, Heather for a loop at the end of a night-out saying: “I’m gonna live here someday” and we oohed and we ahhed.

When I found her she was loved but she needed a modern touch (or three). I had a hard time seeing past the flowered wallpaper and powder pink and blue bathroom borders. It took three visits to convince me her bones were worth this momentous investment.
So I bid….

… and I signed,
and initialed,
and signed,
and initialed,
and initialed.
And then she was mine.

And then, she was ALL of ours… for holidays // Friendsday Wednesdays // super Mario marathons // pregnancy tests // Tetris tournaments // Ireland days // break ups // baby announcements // rock bands // beer Olympic planning // flash mob practice // engagements // tree climbing // PJ mask pretending // strolls to calm down // wedding planning // strolls to enjoy the first day of spring // strolls to enjoy the buds on the trees… strolls to get away from the holidays for a minute.

She was a place so many of us called home at different times, for different reasons, and for different lengths of time. Some for a hang sesh, some for five years or more. Some came to live here fresh from the womb, and some just stayed overnight after an epic “home base happy hour”.

It’s been eleven years of being hugged with love by her walls, sitting in the sunshine that streams through her windows, trusting the safety of her space and, most recently – preparing for her big debut: handling her with care, adding special touches and dressing her in her finest to meet her new family. Scraping off her old layers has been a labor of love and collaboration. I’m so grateful to my hubby, my family, and my framily. Who made that house our home for so long.

Cheers to Louis James – the most beautiful babe on the block!

Happy Listing Day Louie J!

Grad school treats and "beachin' sweets"!

I love when life weaves old friends back into your day-to-day unexpectedly. It's like a little "natural push" or a "divine-undertow"...

Aileen and I met in grad school and we immediately bonded over a healthy amount of optimism and a serious low BS tolerance - and never looked back. We've been collaborators, co-creators, and co-conspirators in the best ways. We've, sort-of, seamlessly drifted in and out of each others lives for the last 12 years (she even helped me land my current full time gig).

Today, she is a full time instructional designer, a full time mommy to two of the cutest blondies ever, and she's taking her custom sweet-shop, The Beachin' Bakery, to the next level. Check out the evolution of our design and the logo life of The Beachin' Bakery, serving Ocean County, New Jersey and surrounding areas.
+ All the good vibes!

... Daydreaming would be my superpower.

It's Thursday and according to my Outlook reminder I should be "establishing my professional goals for 2017/18 to discuss with my boss on Monday". (But I'd rather be daydreaming!)

It can get me through a "week-long-feeling-Tuesday" and make it feel like a back porch drink on my favorite Friday.

If I was a superhero, daydreaming would be my superpower. I'm really good at it.

packing this morning, for a last-minute weekend trip...

... I spent almost 30 minutes in Barcelona with my hubby exploring via Segway, shishito peppers, and cannabis clubs.
blog_2_playground.jpg

Commuting behind A bus driver with lots of stops, I momentarily...

... joined my niece for a swing on our favorite playground in the Poconos before heading back to the dinner table for ice cream - via sunroof.

And somewhere
along the way
I 'saw'...

... my office-converted-shed with doodle. on the front, some collaborative creatives by my side, and a steady flow of clients out the door...!

Mind-wandering leads me to my most authentic living. I've been struck with the most perfect idea for a client when I let go and let them come to me. Working when it "feels" right goes against every other traditional job I've had in life - but when deadlines are more flex and you're able - it's so much more rewarding. Fall into a daydream once a day.

This weekend...

I'm looking forward to amazing food, much needed quality time with my hubby, and drinks/sights in Portland, Oregon.

I hear it's perfect for wanderers, and I'm on-board for inspo.

+ All the good vibes!
Jess

“Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August.”

Around mid-May, when warmer weather starts to wind its way into Philly, I feel an urgency to cram every possible fun thing into any free square of my June to August calendar.

Working through this life-long-plan-making addiction into my 30s, I started to realize that I've gotten too good at ignoring the pleas of summer - those : internal whispers : from Mother Nature, granting us rare permission to care a little less and embrace life a tiny bit more.

Embracing the slow and still of summer allows me to find a greater balance and appreciation for the details of life (when I can remember to do so!) The complexities of life will continue to ebb and flow indefinitely. Being mindful, simplifying, and accepting things as they come, has led me to some of my most peaceful days (and to the creation of some design work I'm most proud of.)

As I'm looking forward to more sunshine and some exciting greeting card ideas to share from doodle. this summer, I'll be living life on a lazy river! Happy summering and check out Other Summering things that Feed My Soul, below!
- Jess

"Lazy Riverring"
(see: saturdaying and embracing life)

  1. Don't fight the flow and don't rush it.

  2. Take something valuable, to carry from your journey.

  3. Trust you'll end when and where you're supposed to.

  4. Float on!

Other summering that feeds my soul:

more freeze pops // less worrying about Monday on Sunday // more drink recipe experiments // less traffic during work commutes (no school buses!) // more time to teach Lemon how to play TV-tag // less excuses // more summer rain storms // less complaining // more YES

Just breathe - and let the design take over...

It seems fitting that my first design blog should be about me and my fiancee, Ben! Our wedding save-the-dates had been on my mind without a motivator to get me started. Procrastination was nestled comfortably somewhere with my sketch book and my sharpies.

Amidst the extravaganza of: buttermilk pancakes, 7 syrup options, the hottest strongest coffee in one of their mugs I'll steal one of these days, 2 lbs. of crisp-p-p bacon and all of the nostalgia I enjoy so much being in the house I grew up in - I should have known a creative moment would emerge.

Ben snapped the shot of the place-mat texture *thank you!* and we enjoyed the rest of the visit at Ti and To's, leaving to go finish the weekend with sweatpants and Netflix. A few hours later it struck me that the palette of the place-mats would compliment our vibe perfectly (I love when that happens!) - and I got my hands on my old-as-crap copy of CS3 to begin!

LESSON LEARNED: Procrastination (or waiting for the perfect time to design) still works for me!

I'm excited to launch doodle.'s new site starting with: our wedding website and our wedding stationary!

One of my favorite things when working with clients is being able to tailor designs to showcase who they are for the event their hosting. Getting to do that for ourselves is surprisingly emotional for me.

More doodle.'s to come as the site continues to develop itself. (Please get in touch with helpful feedback, critiques or testimonials, here!)
